Words

Worldview

By Nathan Cornett - Guest Blogger

I am amazed at the amount of words on the internet. When I sit and think about it I am amazed by the sheer number of sites that come back when you Google the word “words” (it’s “about 528,000,000” pages for words—all in just 0.29 seconds). Words truly are abundant, and I am not innocent of providing my fair share. I love words. But if there is anything I have learned it’s that words are CHEAP. A dime a dozen. In this Google age, they may be much, much cheaper.

But there are some words that are well worth clinging to. I know, I know, we hate to be clingy. No one likes to depend on anyone else, and we certainly don’t want to be duped into anything; and with all the scams in the world people are becoming more and more skeptical as time moves on. These words however are WORTH something. They are valuable. They are words that breath life in to death. These words aren’t like mine, they are similar, but they’re strikingly different. These words have an extraordinary power to transform life and change viewpoints—entire paradigms even.

Of course, Christian blog, you know where I am going with this. Jesus! In fact, Jesus himself said, “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” (John 6:63-64a)

Our culture is clamoring for truth, and we have more words than we know what to do with at our finger tips; yet, life is fleeting. We find that our worlds are slowly crowding us in. This in the midst of living in one of the most influential and affluent countries in the world! Freedom doesn’t produce happiness, it provides the opportunity to pursue it, but it doesn’t provide it. Jesus’ words on the other hand ARE life. They are lasting. They are deep.

Even right now as some of you read this, you are asking yourself about the meaning and purpose of your life. You are asking yourself what the point of it all is. You keep wading through all the words, but you keep finding the same old empty promises that you have seen for a long time. And I am not saying that you are going to find the words of life in a church! Unfortunately, church these days tends to fall into the “lifeless” category more often than not. But the words of Jesus . . . Now these are REAL.

Of course, don’t take my word for it! My words are the same as the 528 million words you can find on Google and they are only a reflection of the words of Jesus. Jesus’ words are where it’s at. They are the words that can speak to you in the still of your heart when you experience the pain of losing your spouse. Or when you feel numb all over because you just found out your wife is leaving you. Or when your kids are making decisions that are hurting them . . . The words of pastors, friends and co-workers just seem to come up short—but the words of Jesus . . . Do you believe?
